Hi Yi,
This is a very cool paper indeed and combined with the earlier paper in Science from Schmucker's lab (Watson et al.,), leaves no doubt that Dscam splicing plays an important role in defending the organism against pathogens.
Regarding the number of isoforms, as of now, Drosophila virilis is the record holder at 39,936! (See Graveley et al., (2004) RNA 10:1499.) I'm sure there's a critter that has more though.
